Understanding international standards

Liebherr Machines Bulle SA considers understanding international dimensioning standards as a strategic priority and has launched a wide-scale training plan.

The case

Liebherr Machines Bulle SA (LMB) is based at Bulle, in the Swiss canton of Fribourg, and develops and manufactures Diesel and gas engines and injection systems as well as hydraulic components and pump distribution reducers. As a member of the Liebherr group, the company sells its products worldwide and runs many co-development projects with international partners working, according to the context, based on the standards of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In order to ensure the necessary level of understanding of dimensioning standards, the engine manufacturer asked Cetim experts to create an intensive 3-day training course on company premises, for two groups of 14 individuals. "Here at LMB, all of our technical drawings mention the international standard ISO 2768 in their title blocs" indicated Christophe Petite, in charge of the LMB design office. "However, we felt that it had become indispensable for us to improve our understanding of the US dimensioning and tolerancing system, ASME Y14.5M-2009, which corresponds, more or less, to the international ISO standard, but also includes a few particularities".

This training course was initially intended for manufacturers, and was organized at the Bulle site and for LMB product, but was rapidly extended to the entire production system. "After completing this intensive course, the results are rather satisfactory, as the participants were able to acquire a new approach to dimensioning and tolerancing for mechanical parts, and above all, were able to understand and be made once again aware of the importance of dimensioning on technical drawings, which remain contractual documents with our suppliers if a dispute arises", continued Christophe Petite. Based on these results, the company has decided to train a referral group responsible for monitoring the quality of technical drawings and drafting documents on good practices in the field.
